Vacancy for: Medical Officer
The MRC Laboratories, The Gambia is the Medical Research Council's largest establishment conducting laboratory, field based and clinical research in a developing country.  The Unit aims to improve the health of people in developing countries by contributing to the development, testing and safe adoption of interventions aimed at reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases.

The Clinical Services Unit is run by the Director of Clinical Services assisted by two Medical Officers who have primary responsibility for the care of all in-patients at our 42 bedded ward devoted to the care of acute paediatric and adult medical cases.  The Unit has been working in clinical research into the common diseases in West Africa and the successful applicant will be encouraged to actively contribute to these research programmes and to develop their own research ideas.

We wish to appoint a Medical Officer and seek applications from candidates with:

      MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
      Minimum of three years post-graduate experience, with preference given to paediatric and general medicine.
      Excellent written and spoken English
      Experience of supervising staff
      Good record keeping skills
      The ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team
      Excellent communication skills
      Ability to deal sensitively with the patients
      Basic computer literacy
      Interest in clinical research into the diseases of the tropics
      Basic understanding of medical audits
      Willingness to work flexi-time

Although not essential, Primary  FWACP or equivalent would be an advantage

The appointment is for 2 years.

The salary will be in Occupational Group D3 at a minimum total salary package of  433,770 Dalasis per annum.  For displaced staff the package will include displacement allowances, furnished accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees and other benefits.
