MRC Laboratories, The Gambia is the Medical Research Council's largest establishment conducting laboratory, field based and clinical research in a developing country. The Unit aims to improve the health of people in developing countries by contributing to the development, testing and safe adoption of interventions aimed at reducing the burden of morbidity and mortality from infectious diseases

We are interested in receiving applications from suitably qualified candidates to undertake excellent research in Pneumococcal carriage for our Bacterial Diseases programme. Our Unit has long term experience in Pneumococcal studies spanning over two decades and is an excellent place to conduct studies aimed at understanding dynamics of Pneumococcal carriage in communities with high Pneumococcal carriage and in evaluating population biology of Pneumococcus after the introduction of the Pneumococcal Vaccination Programme.

We seek someone with:


* First degree in Biomedical Science.
* MSc in a topic related to molecular microbiology.
* Minimum of four years post-graduate experience, with preference given to molecular microbiology.
* Extensive laboratory experience and skills.
* Experience in supervising staff and training of students.
* Excellent written and spoken English.
* Excellent communication skills.
* Computer literacy in Word, Excel, Powerpoint and statistical software.
* Ability to formulate important and relevant research questions to design appropriate study protocols and to manage all aspects of these studies from grant applications through to publication and dissemination of the results.
* The ability to work well in a multi-disciplinary team.
* Ability to promote collaborations between different research groups and across international boundaries.
* Willingness to work flexi-time.

Although not essential, a PhD in a topic related to the molecular microbiology of bacterial infection would be an advantage.

The appointment is for 3 years in the first instance.

Salary will be in Occupational Group D3/E1 dependent on qualifications and experience. The minimum total salary package for the post will be 396,590 Dalasis per annum. For displaced staff the package will include a displacement allowance, furnished accommodation, flights, contribution to school fees and other benefits.
